Jess Kang’s EF

Older stanced cars are my favourite.  Whats better than showing an older chassis some love.  No need to scrap them.  They may not have the same part support as newer cars but they make up for it in character.  Jess Kang’s EF is one such example.  The parts list isn’t extensive.  The final product that she was able to create, is certainly noteworthy.  People say you can stance any old car and get internet points.  Not true, your mods still have to come together in one cohesive body.  If you have to mangle your fenders just to fit those RSs you bought.  THAT isn’t cool.  If you leave the small nicks and dents your 20+ year old car have inevitably accumulated, that’s just personality.

While Jess is an accomplished photographer she asked Jon Schusteritsch and Ivy League East’s Brian Arthus to take over the camera duties.  I’ve found a lot of photographers are hesitant to shoot their own cars.

White on white with black trim and retro grey interior.  The woodgrain wheel brings it all together.  Be it NRG, Momo or Nardi they as ways look good in a retro ride.

Your name, Your car:

Jess Kang, 1991 Honda Civic DX (EF sedan)

What do you do?

I am a Sales Lead Supervisor at White House Black Market and photographer for Canibeat

What do you love more, your boyfriend or your car?

Well right now, I’m single haha, but there’s nothing I could love more than my car 🙂

When did you buy your car, and when did you start modding it?

I bought the car in May 2012. I had just moved out of home with nothing but my bags. I scrounged up the money I had and bought the car with 134k miles on it. It was stock for a week and lowered on it’s stock wheels right after. A few weeks later, I received my first set of wheels and threw them on immediately.

What mods are currently on the car?

The car is basically stock besides a custom suspension. People ask me what suspension I’m on and I can’t really answer them other than “custom.” The suspension is a hybrid combination CRX and Accord coilovers. With the car being as low as it is, it still travels very well. My rear suspension is maxed out but the front can go lower. I also have a NRG woodgrain steering wheel that I absolutely love. My wheels are custom widened steelies.

I also have a mk3 lip on my front bumper. The front and rear bumper sits much, much higher than the actual frame of the car so the lip levels out the undercarriage. I had my motor raised but my motor mounts have been shot for a while so I’m really taking a risk everytime I drive the car haha.

Is there an older car that doesn’t look better with a mk3 lip?  Same goes for the wink mirror.

Do you cringe or smile when you drag frame on an obstacle?

At this point, I don’t think I make any facial expressions haha. It’s such a normal occurrence that I’m used to it by now. When it doesn’t scrape when it should is when I start to get worried

If you didn’t own your current car, what would you be driving? Would it be modded?

If I didn’t own this EF, I’d probably be driving a 3rd Gen Accord Sedan with the flip-up headlights haha, and it would probably be lower. People ask me why I never considered an Euro car, and believe me I have, but I figure realistically, old school Japanese cars are better for me, and they go lower.

How long are you holding on to it?

EF sedans are pretty hard to find in good condition. I have a line of people that are waiting for me to sell this car, and maybe one day I will, but not anytime soon.

Whats next?

For the spring, I plan on coming out a little lower by switching from 175/50 tires to 165/50 tires. I also will be ordering top hats for the rear so I can drop the rear a bit more. Other than that, there’s not much that I plan for the car other than normal maintenance. I want to keep it a simple and clean daily.

Shout outs.

Id’ like to thank a few people for helping me with the car. I wont mention their names because of unfortunate events that lead us to drift our own ways, but I will always be thankful.

Thanks Jess, for allowing us to post you car!!

Frozen Friday.

Took a few shots of the wagon after work.  Photos are a work in progress for me.  I’d like to hear some critiques, if you have time to spare.  Cheers. 🙂 scraped

Precious Metal.

Fairly certain the car wasn’t the focus of this pic ;).

We haven’t done a feature in quite some time.    I wanted to let the barage of H20 pics subside before posting this car.  These pics were taken by Matt Berenz (excluding the first one, unknown source  Mathew Buchanan) during the Canibeat meet at H20.  While VW has tried to make thier Jetta a “world car”.  It has not taken away its appeal in the “Dub Scene”.  I apologize profusely for using that cliche term.  Many cars have come and gone, (I’m looking at you, Civic) but the Jetta has stood the test of time. Ryan Beard’s car helps further the Jetta’s appeal to the scene.   It’s helped change my opinion at least.  Quite frankly I wasn’t a fan when the car was first released.  This and a few other builds have had thier turns changing my mind.

The wheel and body colour combo make or break a vehicle.  The gold and silver colours go miles in bringing this car together.  I don’t think a crazy colour would have worked as well.  The two colours also flow into the trunk, with the air setup.  The Classic Nardi wheel and knob (might have to get myself that), again tie the colour together.  Wood grain like a sir.

Check the below images for Ryan’s and Matt’s work.  Ryan mentions his future plans, and full parts list below.

Ryan, thanks for allowing us to shoot your car.

Loving the choice of bride seats.

You know you’re awesome when you have a matching BLQ in your trunk.

Even though I’m on bags I still daily drive really low and my lip kit has its battle scars, I cringe in success when I scarp on the speed bumps everyday when I leave my apartment.

If you didn’t own your current car, what would you be driving?
Would it be modded? It was a toss up between the Jetta or the Genesis Coupe, I have no idea where the coupe would be if I had gotten that instead, but regardless it would have the same styling as the Jetta. Bagged, wheels, but more performance based.

How long are you holding on to it?
Until she dies.  Perfect answer, too many kids with leased cars up for sale nowadays.

Whats next?
Starting January I’m going to be dropping a 2012 Passat 3.6L Engine. Also reupholstering the interior with leather including a gold cross stitch. And an independent rear suspension from the Mk5 GTI to allow for camber and wider fitment.

Shout outs.
Rotiform for the amazing wheels, Bag riders for the great costumer service, air lift for allowing me to park at there tent at some of the largest events this past year. Along with all the websites that have featured my car already.

Preformance BMW 2012 Car of the Year.

Our very own Steve Van Sleuwen’s E30 is in running for Performance BMW’s car of the year.  Even if you don’t vote for Steve’s, the other cars are worth a look too!!  Deathlens also too photos of Sia Honarkhah’s e28.

Scraped Subaru Photoshoots | H2Oi 2012

Seems odd posting a subaru shoot from H20i.  But thats when happens when you’re friends with Matt Berenz.  I was able to convince him to take a few snaps of Trent’s bagged Impreza Outback, Brad’s Legacy GT and my own Legacy Brighton.  Unfortunately we did not have enough time at our first location to get enough shots of Trent’s Impreza.  At least we got one good family photo.

This thing has me considering bags.

Met my new Legacy bretheren Brad.  Helped me make up my mind on black side skirts.  I just need to find a rear valence now.

H20i 2012. Say Hello!!

Please feel free to say hello to any of us.  We should be down there for Thursday mid day.   Looking forward to meeting new faces.  We’ll all be rocking Scraped.Crusaders. shirts.  Stickers (banners and small decals) on the cheap will be in my Subie wagon. :

Geoff:Blondie is our “PR rep” lol (mostly because the rest of us are socially awkward)

IMPORTEXPO is upon us again.  October 13th, it will be held indoors at Markhams Fairgrounds.  The event features selected cars from registrants.  So, you won’t be seeing shitty vehicles.  IMPORTEXPO’s own NSX is reason alone to go to the show.  We’ll be providing coverage for those who are unable to attend.  Also there will be

Level 1 S2Ks

For me Dan’s S2000 is the best stanced car in Toronto.  The shot of his car rolling is unreal.   James’ blue one is up there too.  Almost can’t decide between the two.  Video by Backstage Productions.

We’ve decided to create on online store for our stickers and T-shirts.  The T-shirts are made with American Apparel t-shirts.  And as of now are a super limited run (6).  These are not the run of the mill Gilden shirts.  Trying to feel out the demand.  If you would like a completly custom shirt (size, shirt colour, ink colour, and cut) feel free to email at

The stickers are also on a small limited run.  We’re currently out of the banners though.

Scraped does Eurokracy

The first roadtrip of the year is complete.  There were a few hiccups on the way though.  My Subaru decided to wearout a wheelbearing in the most inconvienent time so she was MIA.  NBD, I got to ride shotgun in Steve’s E30, which later won Best BMW at the show. 🙂  Kristoff chewed through a oil pan on the way.  Spare pan in the form of JB Weld was used.  Weather was AWESOME, cars were AWESOME, the women were French=AWESOME.  EuroKracy seems to have grown 4-5 fold since the first event last year.  This seems optimistic when I say this but I can see it growing into Canada’s H20.  More coverage in a bit.
